April is Stitch Away Stress Awareness Month! For celebrating all of those stressful moments that have changed to happiness lets go and crochet together a Sleepy Owl. My name is Jennifer Orengo, born in Manhattan, New York and raised in the lovely Caribbean island Puerto Rico. Yes, my parents are puerto ricans. So, I'm what is call a Nuyorican that has that mix of the Caribbean and the big city. So cool, right! My Abuelita, grandmother in Spanish, show me how to crochet when I was a little girl. Today I still have some of the yarn and the crochet hook she gave me that first time I started to learn crochet. My Abuelita is at heaven now, but I remember that I always called her Abuelita Amen. I never new why. And it hit me one day. She was a very religious person, so what I remember as a child was that she always show us how to pray. At the end of every prayer you know that it finish whit an Amen. So it stuck, she was and still is my Abuelita Amen. I'm really grateful that she took the time to show me this amazing craft. Is not until the past few years that people is accepting it as an art and a way of life. I remember that before people always said that crocheting, also knitting, was an abuelita thing. I'm super happy to be part of this new crochet generation and to be able to share it to the world. Love you all and welcome to the Crochet Lifestyle!!!!

Sometimes learning something new is overwhelming. Especially if you are teaching yourself online through tutorials!
Here are a couple of tips that I hope will encourage you if you are thinking of learning. 1 - Start with a soft yarn. There's nothing worse than using scratchy yarn. You want something that feels nice! Don't start out too small either. 2 - Practice, practice and practice some more! It might take a few goes to get something that you are happy with. Don't freak out if you don't get it in the first try. 3 - Don't be afraid to unpick! It can be hard to unravel a row (or three) but it is better to take that extra minute to re do a row than be unhappy with the final product. 4 - Experiment! Try different hook sizes and yarn thicknesses, then you'll see what results you like the best. 5 - Break the rules! If you think something would look better with an extra stitch here, or and extra few rows, then do it! Its your project after all! 6 - Use different sources. I have done some tutorials of different stitches (I know I haven't covered everything yet), but maybe there is another explanation that speaks to you. Maybe a you tube tutorial is what you need! 7 - Ask questions! Get a friend to learn with you. And have fun! No empiece demasiado pequeño tampoco. 3 - ¡No tengas miedo a descoser! 6 - Utilizar diferentes fuentes. |
